A Penned Life

We are each given a journal at birth

On which we write our lives

Ruled pages of notated worth

Events penned to our archives

We hope to write a novel long

A tome with great story to tell

With characters great and strong

And a life that’s been lived well

We write our words in strong black ink

Our past becomes indelible

No thought to what readers think

Our truths are not compellable

As pages turn and become filled

We can look back at our words

To things which we had not willed

Now unable to become blurred

We cannot erase or even correct

What has been written on the pages

The grandeur of each small defect

Remains well inked for the ages

So be careful what you will write

The words that may soon be read

A book of living our lives upright

We hope to leave when dead

beautiful poem. like many of your other posts, it reminds me of other artists’ work, this time it is Story of a Life by Harry Chapin.
