Fallen Brother

We recently lost our fellow Dragon Slayer Brother, Robert Hawbecker, to the tragedy of suicide. And although no amount of lovely words can ever encapsulate what is the sum of someone’s life, I offer the following poem as a memoriam to a dear friend and real biker. May your eternal days be spent riding a heavenly Harley!

2013 Dragon Slayer Trip 051

The band of brothers is now one less

A Dragon Slayer has chosen the long sleep

A palpable loss felt by all the rest

For one of our own we could not keep

We shared many a twisting mile

Upon fast and faithful iron steed

A bond well shared but all the while

We could not see you were in need

What tragedies beset you in life

That you felt you could not share

With good friends or loving wife

When needed, desperate to be there

How well did we know our brother

If none of us could recognize

Your longing to meet Earth Mother

Your own hand bringing your demise

Too late now to spend shared time

Or ask those harder questions

About those thoughts in your mind

That brought death in their reflections

I hope that you have found peace denied

In some sunlit and happy place

Your memory honored with pride

By lane’s hallowed empty space

As brothers we have failed you

In some unintentional way

But a Dragon Slayer you are true

Well beyond this darkened day

Pray do I, those knights that remain

Will learn from our dear lost brother

That when life brings great pain

We are here for one another
