Tuesday Tidbits #6

Welcome to the limited series, Tuesday Tidbits. A collection of quotes to provide inspiration, determination, and elevation. I hope you find something that brightens your day!

“Do not fear form. She can give rhythm and rhyme, structure the abstract, bring lilt and lyric. She is the mistress and muse to creation.”

“In a world of Tweets, YouTube, and Memes, has poetry been resigned to the same fate as Latin? Used as a rare and archaic reference, so doctors and lawyers can sound smarter?”

“In an ocean of words, there are but a few islands. Beautiful green jewels against the blue. They burst into existence through great pressure, heat, and upheaval. A land of thought thrust into the sunlight, where grows the colors of tone, subject, and shade. Something you can stand on.”

“It doesn’t matter how many great writers have come before. In a world where the only constant is change, subject provides every opportunity to be your own great writer. Shakespeare could not describe jumping out of a plane. And the World War II paratrooper poet could not describe being in space. And the journaled mind of intrepid astronaut, cannot describe what may be next. Be the next!”

“Must you have had great struggles in your life to be a good writer? Yes. Luckily, every person has great struggles in their life. Okay, maybe not luckily! Good writing comes from being able to express those struggles, not in the having them.”

“It’s a forest of words out there. For a writer to survive, you must select the best ones, cut them down, and then arrange them to live within. In the end, you just hope it holds something more than splintered hands, aching back, and restless soul. That’s survival.”

“We want our writing to be timeless, but even the slightest hint of reference can date a literary work. If I refer to ‘writing a love letter’ today, I somehow know, subconsciously, that it would be an email, with a good chance of little punctuation, and would definitely have emojis.”

Now get out there and write something!

  1. Great thoughts Brad…always good to be reminded of valuable truths. Thank you!

  2. Jim Borden says:

it seems like poetry making a comeback; I also think of all the great songwriters out there as really being poets, who set their poetry to music. And I agree that we all have a story inside us…
