Language of the Land
Of course, there is still great bigotry
We have hated throughout our history
The indigenous sent to reservations
The decimation of an entire nation
American born treated like tramps
In our Japanese internment camps
When slavery was to be abolished
Jim Crow laws were crafted and polished
The loving ones resisted by heated shove
Based solely judged on whom they love
Every ethnic witch hunt for colored hue
Where different meets an unfair due
The taxed territories who pay by rote
But we withhold their right to vote
And the lives we kill in prison cells
A hatred we must all see too well
Met by force with harming intent
We hate the words of any dissent
And the language of the land
Become the measure of the man
So much truth in these lines
Thank you, Dessert Flower! I appreciate your reading and commenting. Glad you stopped by!
Sad, but true. Sometimes I wonder who i’d be if I internalized all the lessons i’ve been taught by our so-called leaders’ actions instead of rejecting them reflexively. But then I look around me these days and wonder no more.
You make a powerful point Sudra! Thanks for reading and commenting!
wow, this one is so achingly sad and shows how history has repeated itself, over and over again. when will we learn to respect all of humanity?
Our day is coming, Beth! I have to believe that because to think otherwise leaves no hope.
I am ever hopeful
Great stuff. It must be put into a school curriculum where kids can read this.
Thank you, Yassy! I do agree that we need to do a better job teaching our history as we know it. The good, the bad, and the ugly!
a sad commentary on human nature.
I’m curious if there is a link between the photo and the poem…
No, I found the photo after the poem was complete. I thought it went well the the title. Nothing deeper than that. Thanks for your constant support, Jim!
OK, thanks. I thought I was missing something… 🙂
How many times throughout history can we still be making the same mistakes?
Too many times, but hopefully we can start to see things differently. Thanks Pete!
Brad you just keep writing these beautiful heart tugging poems. I love the rhythm of this style. Such truth spoken in these words my friend. Beautiful work. Hugs and love ❤️ Jonikins
Thank you, dearest Jonikins! 💖
My pleasure my dearest Brad. Sending a sailboat with wings, inside will be two red headed mermaids 🧜♀️ they will sing songs of their beloved days under the ocean when pollution didn’t exist. They will also bring a comb expecting to get their hair brushed.
Have a blessed Tuesday my friend. Love 💕💕😘Jonikins
Perfect!!!
