Mad Respect

~~~
You earned my respect many years ago
When you chose the hardest choice
Ignored the clamor, family turned foe
And listened to your own inner voice
~~~

You found a heart that made you happy

You decided to control your own life

You spoke your vows standing by the sea

And took for yourself a lovely wife

~~~
Most families could ask for little more
Unless cultured bias leads them blindly
Tradition trumping a love so pure
They could never see the heart you see
~~~

It is all their loss tallied in the end

As what fades is their desired control

You always stood by your very best friend

And have earned your kindred soul

~~~
And when it came time to stand alone
With the angst and the fear that holds
You spoke your truth in strident tone
And chose to live by being most bold
~~~

This simple choice to fight for yourself

Choosing to break when you could no longer bend

Is what I see as your greatest wealth

And why I am lucky to call you friend

~~~
  1. Your words make my heart full and give me comfort that I’ve taken important steps towards being who I choose to be rather than be what others wanted me to be. Fabulous poem!
    Stunning work! I agree, it is important that we be true to ourselves, despite what others think; afterall, others don’t live with us, but we have no choice but to live ourselves.
    I agree with ever comment. So well put my friend. Such a wonderful poetic piece about love, boldness, courage, and respecting oneself enough to break that mold. Beautiful work Brad.
