I Can’t Be

I can’t be the man you need

Because you don’t need a man

And if I am not what you need

Then what is it that I am

I can’t be your greatest love

If your heart you won’t give away

If it is not for the love

Then why is it I would stay

I can’t be your dreamy knight

A damsel you will never be

If no need for saving

Then what is the need for me

I can’t be too far down

A long list of held dears

Yet somehow go all-in

Despite my own fears

I can’t buy in to us

When you won’t share the cost

But I am certain I can be

The loving man you lost

Very well said, my dear friend! It takes two people putting forth the effort. You are amazing in my book!

Wow. This one hit a bit too close to home. Suffice it to say that about a decade ago I was saying a version of this exact same thing. 😳

Thanks, Sudra! Good to know it wasn’t just me. I am not sure how well I did at truly capturing the frustration I felt, but I appreciate your kind words. Here’s to shit like that being in the past for both of us!

  5. Wow, what a brilliant last stanza!
